There is a foundational belief in many wellness practices, that the body is capable of healing its self in extraordinary ways IF it is allowed to. Unfortunately many of our most common activities, such as driving or sitting at a screen, inhibit the body in its most basic functions.
When applied to massage, the word 'holistic' refers to a practice which is oriented toward re-balancing the whole person. The body is invited to be calm, along with the mind and spirit. For some people this makes intuitive sense, but sometimes clients like to understand why the mind has to be part of a holistic picture (let alone the spirit). When working to release physical (especially chronic) tension, the mind also needs to take a break from habitual anxieties and patterns of thought which can ultimately leave their mark in the body.
If the mind cannot find peace the body ends up exisiting in a background state of 'fight or flight'. This means that stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol circulate constantly and interfere with the body's capacity to rest and recover. In a state of stress our digestion is less effective, our body stops trying to deal with long term repair and focuses on getting through the short term in 'survival mode'. This is a state many of us live in for weeks, months or years at a time and it eventually takes its toll on our health at all levels. Taking some time away from these patterns and allowing your body to be held, can provide the space needed to move towards healing. This is what I offer.
